The Economics class taught by Nancy Rives was working on a collaborative and problem-based lesson up in library on 12/5. It was almost no time before the girls decided it would be both easy and useful to share their notes as they went along, and they quickly established a shared google-doc to do so even while they were in class and brainstorming on how they would attack the problem they were given. As part of the project they needed to explore a number of information sources to access and analyze complicated data. Their instinct to use available, simple, technology to steam-line the process was great to see.
Nancy Carrig's World History is using Google Reader to curate the news. Each student has been assigned a country whose current events they need to follow throughout the school year. With Google reader they can choose a number of sources to follow and get a feed of stories related to their country. They have the opportunity to critically assess sources of information as well as efficiently gather and collect information.
In Robin Z's classes: "My senior class is sharing their research for presentations with me to critique before they finish. I shared the questions they should be answering in their presentation with them thru google docs. Trying to save paper!""We used google docs to formulate our new science department philosophy statement. We shared it to edit, etc..." From Brenda Brickley:"My stats/probability class recently worked on a project that they presented through Google App - Power Point - I would like to know how to do this - they all seemed to know and I told them to ask Jennifer - they then sent them to me for review - loved it!" Also from Brenda: The geometry classes have recently had their first exposure to Geogebra. The software is user-friendly and can be downloaded at home at no charge. They have also been downloaded to all of the computers at school. They were asked to explore the use of Geogebra at home and find a feature they thought would be interesting to the class. Each of the students shared this on Googledocs. All of their suggestions were displayed on the googledoc discussion board and I featured them in the classroom for all to see in coordination with their netbooks. Each student talked about the procedure they chose and we all tried it. It was great!!!!!!
